Saban Retirement Rumors Take Tragic Turn. For weeks the rumors have swirled around Alabama head football coach Nick Saban and whether or not he’s retiring.

It started the day before Christmas, when it was leaked that Saban had held a meeting with his team to let them know that he would be stepping down after the 2021-22 season; it trended for days afterwards; #ThankYouNick sat atop Twitter for days. (Read more)



A mysterious tweet was sent from Saban’s rarely used Twitter account the day after Christmas:

It seemed at this point that Saban was just being his usual subtly playful self, toying with the media as he’s known to do.

But it appears there may be a much sadder story behind recent events.

In a podcast on Wednesday, Andre Powell, the father of an Alabama recruit, was interviewed, and spoke of Saban’s visit to their New Jersey home.  He said that Saban informed them that he would, in fact, be stepping down as the Crimson Tide’s head coach after the season, and that it was due to health issues the 70 year old coach was dealing with.

He was straight up with us.” Said Powell. “He said it’s important that my son understands the situation he’s signing up for.

Powell went on to say that Saban let them know that he wouldn’t be announcing his decision until National Signing day on February 2nd so as not to hinder the Crimson Tide’s recruiting efforts.

No word has come from Saban or the University as yet, though it was leaked that Alabama did notify the NCAA of the upcoming coaching change. (Read More)
