Down The Drain: 10 Formerly Great Teams Who Are All But Irrelevant Now
10. Boise State
The Broncos have been the gold standard for Mid Major… or Non Group of 5, as they’re called now… schools. 2021’s 7-5 record isn’t an anomaly; look at recent recruiting classes and the talent on the roster. Boise State is now just a decent lower tier team.
9. Virginia Tech
From 1993 to 2011, the Hokies were one of the dominant programs in college football, winning 10 or more games all but 2 of those years. Since then, they’ve been painfully average… just 73-55 over that span.
Stanford was a Pac 12 Power for the better part of a decade, but in the last 3 years they’ve managed just 11 wins.
Florida hasn’t crashed completely the way some teams on this list have, but they’ve been trending down for a number of years. Not long ago, this is a team that was always in the NC conversation. In 2021 they barely qualified for a bowl.
Just a few years back, the Hurricanes were not only one of college football’s elite teams, they were a brand. Now they’re a middle of the pack team in an average conference.
The Trojans were a virtual dynasty for years not long ago; the were an assembly line of Heisman winners, NFL players, and National Championships. Now they’re just a step above Pac 12 bottom feeders. Only the fact that they seemed to leach some of Oklahoma best parts keeps them from being higher on the list.
It wasn’t long ago the Longhorns joined USC in the National Championship game. Now they’re an average team still riding the coattails of a reputation earned more than a decade ago. It’s hard to imagine it’ll get better in the SEC.
3. Florida State
The ‘Noles haven’t just fallen off, they’ve plummeted to the point where just reaching a bowl is an accomplishment.
2. Penn State
JoePa seems like a long time ago, doesn’t it? They aren’t terrible, but they aren’t even an elite Big Ten team anymore.
It’s been half a decade since the ‘Huskers posted a winning season, and a full decade since they put up 10 wins. This is oone of the winningest programs in college football history…. dominant for decades. Now they just suck.
