2021 Indianapolis Colts Preview

Head Coach: Frank Reich

Record: 11-5

2020 wasn’t a bad year at all for the Colts. The D was among the best in the NFL, they found a new star at RB in Jonathan Taylor, and they were literally a play or two away from beating the Bills in the post season. Rent a QB Philip Rivers was what he was supposed to be… a really good veteran with enough in the tank for one more good run.

2021 Draft Picks

1-21 DE Kwity Paye, Michigan

2-54 DE Dayo Odeyingbo, Vanderbilt

4-127 TE Kylen Granson, SMU

5-165 DB Shawn Davis, Florida

6-218  QB Sam Ehlinger, Texas

7-229 WR Mike Strachan, Charleston

7-248 T Will Fries, Penn State

It wasn’t a great draft for the Colts, but it was solid. Paye will have an impact in year one. They should have gone after a tackle early, but aside from that they drafted to their needs.

Key Pick Ups

Carson Wentz – QB (from Eagles)

Eric Fisher – OT (from Chiefs)

Fisher will help, and Wentz couldn’t possibly have landed in a better spot.

Key Losses

Philip Rivers – QB (retired)

Anthony Castonzo – OT (retired)

Trey Burton – TE (FA)

Jacoby Brissett – QB (to Dolphins)

Rivers was a rental. Castonzo will be missed, and if Wentz winds up missing time they’ll really miss Brissette.

Offensive Coordinator: Marcus Brady

2020 Points Scored: 451 (9th)

Assuming Wentz is healthy, the Colts O is locked and loaded. If he can just be solid, this is a unit who’s only real weakness might be Castonzo’s old spot.

Defensive Coordinator: Matt Eberflus

2020 Points Allowed: 362 (10th)

One of the best units in the NFL was very young in 2020, and should be even better in 2021. The whole squad is back, and there are some incoming improvements arriving from the draft.

Special Teams

Rodrigo Blankenship and Rigoberto Sanchez are back at kicker and punter, respectively, and both are solid. Isaiah Rodgers could see the pro bowl as a returner. All told , one of the league’s better units.

If Things Go Well

If Wents is healthy and plays well, the Colts are a legitimate Super Bowl dark horse.

If They Don’t

Even if Wentz misses time… h@ll, even if he plays poorly… the Colts are still a good bet to see the post season. Issues on the O line could be a factor as well, but it’s hard to see this team not putting up a double digit win total.

Wentz (Again, if healthy) will have a chip on his shoulders, and with the offense he landed in he’s got more than enough ammo to make whatever point he wants to. Look for Taylor to have a huge year, and the D will probably be top 5.
