2021 New York Jets Preview

Head Coach: Robert Saleh

Record: 2-14

How bad were the Jets in 2020? The sports world was stunned when they won a game. The O was terrible; they were held to 10 or fewer points more times (7) than they broke 20 (6). The best Qb was Joe Flacco, and he’s what… 60 now? And the D was almost as bad. The only thing they had going for them was the fact that they were going to end up with the first pick in the draft, and they couldn’t even get that right.

2021 Draft Picks

1-2 QB Zach Wilson, BYU

1-14 G Alijah Vera-Tucker, USC

2-34 WR Elijah Moore, Mississippi

4-107 RB Michael Carter, North Carolina

5-146 LB Jamien Sherwood, Auburn

5-154 DB Michael Carter, Duke

5-175 DB Jason Pinnock, Pittsburgh

6-186 LB Hamsah Nasirildeen, Florida State

6-200 DB Brandin Echols, Kentucky

6-207 DT Jonathan Marshall, Arkansas

The Jets draft… wasn’t as tragic as their 2020 season, but it’s hard to figure what they were thinking at some points. Is Zach Wilson going to be netter than Sam Darnold? Vera-Tucker is a good lineman, but unless he’s all pro good they overpaid for him. Basically half of their picks were significant gambles.. more so than normal, at any rate. But… when you’re this bad maybe you have to bet the house.

Key Pick Ups

Corey Davis – WR (from Titans)

Tevin Coleman – RB (from 49ers)

 Carl Lawson- DE (From Cincinnati)

Sheldon Rankins- DT (From Saints)

Vinny Curry- DE (From Eagles)

Both are backup/ role player types. Both should start for the Jets.

Key Losses

Sam Darnold – QB (to Panthers)

Frank Gore – RB (FA)

Breshad Perriman – WR (to Lions)

The Darnold trade will either go down as the best or worst in Jets history. The other two… meh.

Offensive Coordinator: Mike LaFleur

2020 Points Scored: 243 (32nd)

If you’re expecting a rookie of the year story for Zach WIlson, you’re more than likely to be very disappointed. Most of his skill players would be backups on the majority of teams in the league. It’s less a question of “how well will he do” and more a question of “Will he survive.”

Defensive Coordinator: Jeff Ulbrich

2020 Points Allowed: 457 (26th)

The D line was re-tooled completely re-tooled, and might actually be pretty good. The rest won’t look much better than 2020, but when you’re the Jets, you take the victories where you can get them.

Special Teams

Braden Mann returns at punter, and is actually one of the most popular fan favorites on this team. Pretty much every other position is up for grabs.

If Things Go Well

Vegas has the Jets slated for 6 wins, but that’s really optimistic. If Wilson not only survives, but does put up a rookie of the year season… maybe.

If They Don’t

You have to figure if last years Jets were able to stumble into 2 wins, a slightly improved version should at least manage to match that.

The reality is that the J-E-T-S are going to be bad again this year. They’ll be more competitive than in 2020, but it’s really hard to look at the schedule and pick a win.
