2021 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Preview

Head Coach: Bruce Arians

Record: 11-5

The Buccaneers were probably the closest thing we’ve seen in the free agency era to an NBA style “superteam”. Yeah, it took them a while to get rolling, but once they did, well, what they did to the Chiefs speaks for itself. It’s hard, if you’re not a Bucs fan, not to hate (in sports terms… sadly, that has to be said in today’s world) Tom Brady. Go home, man. You’ve been in more Super Bowls than an entire generation has seen. You’re running out of fingers.

2021 Draft Picks

1-32 LB Joe Tryon, Washington

2-64 QB Kyle Trask, Florida

3-95 T Robert Hainsey, Notre Dame

4-129 WR Jaelon Darden, North Texas

5-176 LB K.J. Britt, Auburn

7-251 DB Chris Wilcox, BYU

7-259 LB Grant Stuard, Houston

The Buccaneers drafted for the future; there weren’t many immediate needs to address. That being said, they did what they set out to do. Trask could be the heir apparent to Brady.

Key Pick Ups

Giovani Bernard – RB (from Bengals)

Bernard is a perfect… and younger… replacement for departed Shady McCoy.

Key Losses

LeSean McCoy – RB (FA)

Joe Haeg – OT (to Steelers)

Haeg’s loss is one the Bucs might find hard to ignore.

Offensive Coordinator: Byron Leftwich

2020 Points Scored: 492 (3rd)

The pieces from last year are mostly intact. Enough said.

Defensive Coordinator: Todd Bowles

2020 Points Allowed: 355 (8th)

See above.

Special Teams

Ryan Succop and Bradley Pinion are solid kickers. The return and coverage units were average, but the Bucs tried to address that in the draft.

If Things Go Well

The 17-0 talk as is usually the case, is nonsense. But with the same team that just won a Super Bowl returning intact, another Super Bowl is a realistic goal.

If They Don’t

Age could become an issue for the Bucs in 2021. Quite a few of the key players are definitely on the plus side in years. If that happens… the Bucs were very lucky with that regard last year… things can go south fast.

At first glance, it’s hard to bet against the Bucs. But there are a few realities in play here. One, as said above, there are quite a few older guys on this team. We won’t even discuss the possibility that Brady will finally show his age this yer; people have been predicting that for a decade and he just keeps adding rings. The biggest concern, if you’re a Bucs fan, should be this. Coordinators have had a full year and an off season to scheme against this team. The NFL knows exactly what Tampa is… and they’ll be ready. There’s a reason you don’t see repeat champions in today’s NFL.
