Head Coach: Sean McVay
The Rams took a year off after their trip to the Super Bowl, but they returned to post season form in 2020. This year, however, it was less about a high flying offense and more about a crushing D…. probably the best in the NFL. The big problem, and the reason that D didn’t carry them further, was the fact that Franchise QB Jared Goff had basically become just another average NFL QB.
2021 Draft Picks
2-57 WR Tutu Atwell, Louisville
3-103 LB Ernest Jones, South Carolina
4-117 NT Bobby Brown, Texas A&M
4-130 DB Robert Rochell, Central Arkansas
4-141 (compensatory pick) TE Jacob Harris, UCF
5-174 DE Earnest Brown, Northwestern
7 RB Jake Funk, Maryland
7 WR Ben Skowronek, Notre Dame
7-252 LB Chris Garrett, Concordia, St. Paul
The Rams are already loaded going into 2021, but they did address some future needs, including some good prospects on the Defensive side. Tutu Atwell was a bit of a gamble, depending on what the Rams intend to do with him….. he’s fast, and a play maker, but he”s the size of a 12 year old. Could be a good all purpose guy; think Darren Sproles or Dave Meggett.
Offensive Coordinator: Kevin O’Connell
2020 Points Scored: 372 (T-22nd)
Rams fans have got to be excited heading into 2021. Tow words… Matthew Stafford. Of course, every team that signs a big name player thinks it’s a game changer, but can one guy make that much difference? When your team is a QB away from Super Bowl contention…. yup. He has a top to bottom great set of receivers to work with, and one of the best O-lines out there. Cam Akers’ will miss all of 2021, and that hurts; it looks like they’ll use the committee approach. Not the big deal it once was, though… it’s not a running league today.
Defensive Coordinator: Raheem Morris
2020 Points Allowed: 296 (1st)
There are holes to fill, and with 5 started gone, it’s hard to imagine the Rams D will be as dominant as it was. But there are enough dominators left that they’ll still be a top 10 unit, and that should be all the O needs.
Outside of Jared Goff, the Rams biggest weakness in 2020 was special teams… they ranked 30th in the league. New ST coach,, and pretty much every position is up for grabs.
If Things Go Well
There are ifs. IF the Rams can put together at least a sufficient running game, and IF the D can overcome the losses, and IF the special teams can be salvaged… all reasonable goals… this Rams team could be dominant and is a legit Super Bowl contender.
If They Don’t
It would be a damn shame for Stafford to finally escape Detroit and land in LA just as things fall apart. But there are enough pieces missing on D and enough questions in the offensive backfield and on special teams that it could happen.
Not to harp on one point, but you have to imagine that Stafford is going to want to make a point and will have a chip on his shoulder. McVay is too good a coach to imagine he’ll let this team under perform., so go ahead and pencil the Rams into your playoff breacket now.
