2020 Record: 3-5
5 ⭐ ……….
3 ⭐………. 14
Year 2 of the Dana Holgorsen regime was supposed to be the year the Cougars broke out. While they did reach the post season, an unimpressive loss to Hawaii in the New Mexico Bowl, this team, especially the defence should have been better. One statistic mattered most; when the Cougars scored 37 points or more, they were 3-0. When they didn’t, they were 0-5.
In a bit of de ja vu, we’ll say it again: this should be the Cougars breakout year. QB Clayton Tune has a year under his belt. The defence, which was statistically far better than the 32 points a game it gave up, returns almost everyone. Throw in a huge injection of transfer portal talent, and the Cougars are locked and loaded for 2021.
If Things Go Well:
The pieces are definitely all there, and the schedule is among the easiest in the country. They don’t have to play UCF or Cincinnati. There’s really no excuse for this team to not win ten games.
If They Don’t
If Tune flops and the defence finds a way to underperform again, it could be another average year for the Cougars.
There’s just too much talent for this team to not at least be in the conversation for the AAC title this year.
